The good news:
Janet has topped the billboard charts with "Discipline" selling 181,000 copies. Janet dethroned Jack Jackson from the top spot which he held for three weeks. This is Janet Jackson's sixth album to top the charts her previous two efforts debut at number 2.
The bad news:
Even though Janet topped the charts it showed her decline in support. She had massive promotional push for this album because the label believed in it. Unfortunately, the first week sales have been her lowest. In 2001 she released "All For You" which sold over 680,000 copies the first week. In 2004 she released "Damita Jo" with 381,000 copies, and her last effort 20 Y.O. sold 296,000.
Her previous efforts didn't receive good reviews and had a weak single to push. Janet and Jermain also stated that Virgin Records didn't promote the albums as they should. "Discipline" has been praised by critics and the lead single was hot and fresh yet radio didn't play it as much. The promotional push has been huge but yet sales aren't there. The decline in Janet's popularity can be caused by many different reasons, one thing for sure is that since her departure from her producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, her sales have never been the same.
Regardless Congrats to Miss Jackson for having the number 1 album in the country!
